What Is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha yoga is one of the most traditional and widely practised branches of yoga, but its meaning is often misunderstood. While many associate it with a slow-paced class involving physical postures, Hatha is much deeper than that. The word itself is made up of two Sanskrit syllables: Ha (sun) and Tha (moon). Together, they represent dual energies—activity and receptivity, heat and coolness, strength and softness. Hatha yoga seeks to balance these polarities through practice, creating harmony in both the body and the mind.
This approach makes Hatha yoga ideal for those new to yoga, as well as experienced practitioners who want to reconnect with their foundation. It is not about performance or competition—it’s about presence. When practised with intention, Hatha can feel like a moving meditation, guiding the practitioner to become more aware of their breath, sensations, and thoughts. It’s the perfect reminder that yoga is as much about what happens within as it is about what happens on the outside.
